Later, when he was alone at his desk, Hornblower paused while trying to write his report to send to London before they sailed. He set the pen down and frowned. Why was this report giving him so much trouble? Was the Prince de Joinville that hard to put into words? Hornblower shook his head. The real question, he realized, is who will read this report? He had to be careful what he put down on paper; if Palmerston got hold of it—and Hornblower thought this entirely possible, especially with this Egyptian business going on—he might feel compelled to show it to the queen. Hornblower rested his elbow on the arm of his chair and stroked his chin as he thought. No, it would be best to send a bare-bones report, stating that the prince was aware of the potential dangers on the return trip and that they would most likely return to France in company, by way of the Caribbean.

He picked up his pen and completed his report in short order. When he was done, he folded the report neatly and sealed it with wax. He stretched for a moment before pulling out his watch—the gold pocket watch that had been a gift from Barbara on the occasion of their twentieth wedding anniversary, reputed to be the most accurate timepiece then in existence. He set it on the desk and pulled out a fresh sheet of paper. He was determined not to miss a chance to write Barbara a letter.
